When I’m out with clients in the DC area, one of the challenges that comes up for a growing family is how to make the best use of limited space. With the anticipated arrival of #2 this summer, we’ve found ourselves in a similar situation.
So we decided to change a few things around and created a multipurpose dining area… that is no longer for dining. Our dining room relocated to a smaller area at the front of the house and our traditional “dining area” has now become the office/ playroom.
I’ll be posting more about this later with the finished space but I wanted to go ahead and share our play area with you. I’m so happy with the way this little space turned out!
Limited space. Lots of storage and function.
Our walls in the dining room are painted a sea foam green color. I found this great rug from All Modern for around $100! It’s hard to find an 8 x 10 rug for that price and this one was perfect for our space. This is a very high traffic area so I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on a rug. I’ve gotten a lot of compliments on this space and everyone is shocked to know the rug was only $100!
The colorful bins and pillows are from Target. Their home decor section is really amazing right now and I loved the bright colors they had in stock for summer. Lots of coral and mint to choose from! Our home is fairly neutral but I wanted a little pop of color for the play area.
Aren’t those Target bins cute? Perfect for toy storage!
Kids toys can really take up a lot of space in a home. I bought this white storage bench from Amazon a few months ago to try and hide some of the baby clutter. It’s amazing how much stuff you accumulate with a child!
I wanted some children’s wall art in her play space but since this is an open area, I didn’t want anything too crazy. The prints really needed to blend with the rest of the decor in the house. So I went looking on Minted for some prints and came back with these safari animals…
We already had the oversized matted frames from Pottery Barn.
All giraffe’s in our home have taken on the name Sophie…
My parents gave her this little Pottery Barn Kids stuffed rocking elephant for her first birthday. She loves “Mr. Elephant” and prefers to give him hugs over actually riding him. PBK has a big selection of stuffed rockers and I love the fact that it’s something fun like an elephant instead of a traditional rocker.
More to come on this area of the house. The other wall is a home office for Mom!
Do any of you have combined rooms?
